There is an
explosion of interest in corrective exercise
that has emerged from the functional training movement.
As the profile of our client/patient
demographic changes, so does the necessary skill set of the
professionals
working with them.
Function is
different
things for different people. And the continuum of function is
more than warming someone up and then throwing them onto a stability
ball and launching water balloons at them.
We are coming full
circle to see
how we can move forward most successfully with our clients after we
take a brief, calculated step back.
Corrective exercise are not a
bunch of single joint isometric exercises.
Anthony teaches that corrective
exercises
are designed to positively influence the neuromuscular system globally
and are not
dictated by symptoms, medical interventions or isolated issues.
When used with
specific functional objectives in mind,
corrective exercises can be progressed to multi planar and/or
proprioceptively
challenging exercises within a given one hour session.
This is what we do everyday at Function
First. We use
corrective exercises to
create an environment where the client can be most successful
performing
exercises/movements that are vertically loaded, multi planar and/or on
labile
surfaces.
The body is cued to
move differently through the stimulus of
the corrective exercises. The
corrective
exercises are ascended, progressively linking together more complex
movements. By
following this programming
strategy, we facilitate changes to the individual’s
biomechanical constraints
and motor control strategies.
For these reasons,
the functional contribution to clients,
athletes and patients is significant.
We
can stop yelling at our clients and athletes to do things differently
and start
teaching their bodies to respond without conscious effort. That translates into an
ideal environment for
truly optimal movement patterns.
